The title is ironic and applies to the life of a housewife on the eve of D-Day. Jeans is the widowed housewife who provides lodging for a pair of navy men while her two daughters lend a hand as Wrens and her son is at war. She and one daughter get involved with the sailors and marry them. D-Day arrives, the war is soon over, and the son comes home, with everyone ostensibly facing the horrible fact that a third world war is a distinct possibility.
