Johns is sent to jail for one year after failing to pay her gambling debts, and she befriends a number of inmates, including Dors, who is taking a rap for her boy friend. Prison life (in an "open" prison where good behavior is all-important) is given a glorified depiction and by the finale Johns has done her time and her beau has returned.
