A sort of Italian prequel to the better-known AMADEUS, this story of Mozart's adolescence is an intelligent work based on a true incident in the composer's life. Davidson plays Mozart, not as the obnoxious brat Thomas Hulce essays in AMADEUS but as a boy hoping to lead a normal life. While staying in Bologna, Davidson falls in love with a local girl and becomes friendly with a youth his own age. To Davidson this is joy unequaled, so he deliberately fails a music exam in hopes of lengthening his stay. A priest fixes the prodigy's test results, however, and Davidson is forced to leave the region and people he has come to love. Pupi Avati directs the vigorous cast with sensitivity, creating a small and special film biography. leave a comment
