A peculiar masterpiece since it is actually a compilation of three brilliant short films--Jean Renoir's A DAY IN THE COUNTRY (1946), Roberto Rossellini's THE MIRACLE (1948), and Marcel Pagnol's JOFROI (1933) brought together by foreign film importer Joseph Burstyn for the benefit of American audiences, who would not otherwise get a chance to see them. Renoir's film is one of his most perfect, adapting a Guy de Maupassant story about a bourgeois mother and daughter who get involved with two oarsmen. Rossellini's picture was originally released in Italy in a diptych entitled L'AMORE and was meant as a vehicle for Magnani. Besides being Fellini's only acting credit, THE MIRACLE was also the film that increased the odds for free speech in motion pictures. When New York's Cardinal Spellman saw the picture, he was morally outraged and attempted to have it banned. For once, the US Justice Department had enough good sense to let it play. The final episode, JOFROI, is a tale of a peasant who sells his land and then tries to prevent the owner from cutting down the olive trees that grow on it. All three episodes have been released as short films and are masterpieces in their own right. leave a comment
