Silly but fun, this sequel to Clint Eastwood's phenomenally successful good ol' boy comedy, EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE, finds Philo (Eastwood) in the process of retiring from bare-knuckle brawling and settling down with his country singer girl friend, Lynne Halsey-Taylor (poorly portrayed by Sondra Locke), his zany mother (Ruth Gordon), and his friendly orangutan, Clyde. The mob, however, has a different idea, offering Philo big bucks to participate in one last fight, a "King of the Streetfighters" brawl, against his old nemesis, Jack Wilson (William Smith). Philo is unable to resist the challenge, but even if he were, the gangsters have kidnaped Lynne to make sure the fight goes on--which it does, moving from one Jackson Hole, Wyoming, bar to another. A much gentler follow-up to the original film, ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN takes the time to humanize the characters, and shows them as passionate human beings instead of the fighting machines they were in the first film. Among the film's many funny moments is a parallel seduction sequence showing Philo and Lynne in one motel room, while Clyde puts the moves on a female orangutan next door. leave a comment
