Set in pre-Civil War Louisiana, WAY DOWN SOUTH tells the melodramatic tale of a youngster who is orphaned and plans on taking control of his late father's plantation. It has since fallen into the hands of corrupt lawyer Maxwell and cruel Middleton, who mercilessly drives the slaves into the ground. The young Breen makes everything turn out hunky-dory by the finish. A rare general-release film with a major distributor, co-authored by black artists. Poet Hughes and veteran black actor Muse (around whom much of the action revolves) collaborated on the screenplay. Director Vorhaus, born in Germany, was in his second year in Hollywood; he had made his mark directing early British talkies. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Score. Songs include "Good Ground," "Louisiana" (Clarence Muse, Langston Hughes), plus the Negro spirituals "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child," "Lord, If You Can't Come, Send One Angel Down." leave a comment
