1929, Movie, NR, 105 mins

Released as a silent in 1929 and again later with partially dubbed sound, this ridiculous picture deals with the travails of Rehmann who, breaking one of the lenses in the French lighthouse he tends, is forced to row ashore for a replacement. Pausing in town for a pick-me-up, the innocent lad is beset by prostitutes. Reluctantly wayward Negri is slapped about by vicious panderer Ward, and Rehmann leaps to her defense. The grateful girl, hoping to find respite from her shameful life, follows him seaward. Unwilling to assume responsibility for Negri, Rehmann pushes off alone, only to founder in a sudden storm. Seeking heavenly intervention in his plight, the lad pledges that he will succour hapless reject Negri in return for salvation from the elemental forces. Saved from the storm, Rehmann redeems his pledge by wedding Negri. Their marriage is marred by the reintroduction of rotter Ward who, wanted for murder, seeks sanctuary with his former floozy, Negri. Divine intervention might have made something of this picture; the acting, directing, and scripting sorely needed it. Some of the dubbed sound appears to have been borrowed from a completely different picture. Negri's fluttering waif is execrable; the role ruined her chances in British films just as her A WOMAN COMMANDS wrecked her U.S. career two years later. leave a comment
