Michael Caine manages to walk through another lousy movie and come out smelling like a rose in this lame Caribbean comedy. As the governor of the obscure British colony of Cascara, Baxter (Caine) spends most of his time enjoying the laid-back lifestyle, despite the endless bitching of his wife, Bianca (Brenda Vaccaro). Then one day the American-owned oil rig on the island strikes something that turns out to be the source of a mineral water that puts all others to shame. Suddenly this sleepy backwater becomes a hive of international intrigue. An American industrialist (Fred Gwynne) tries to secure the water rights for himself; the French, fearful of losing their market for Perrier, plan to bomb the island; and the British take a new interest in their distant but now-lucrative possession. The high point of the film comes with a benefit concert for the islanders in which George Harrison (the film's executive producer), Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and Eddy Grant do a terrific reggae jam. Apart from that scene, the movie is remarkably dull, with only a few good laughs to be found. leave a comment
