Ridley Scott's sleek homage to film noir. Tom Berenger is a New York police detective who's assigned to protect a wealthy socialite (Mimi Rogers) after she witnesses a murder. Cold and aloof at first, she begins to warm to the handsome, shy and somewhat dim-witted detective. Scott keeps the emphasis properly on character, not the contrived storyline, and it works — thanks to an excellent cast that includes The Soprano's Lorraine Bracco and the late Jerry Orbach.
