Warm Nights On A Slow Moving Train: Review

This is a highly polished but uneventful drama that has hints of STRANGERS ON A TRAIN but adheres more closely to the logic of a Harlequin Romance novel. Hughes spends every weekend traveling on the Melbourne-to-Sydney overnight train. On each trip, she selects a male passenger in the piano bar and comes on strong to him. She then entices him to her compartment where she demands a fee before there will be any dallying. Hughes' character is revealed throughout the course of the picture. She is an art teacher in a Catholic girls grade school. She is not a nymphomaniac, nor is she a ruthless whore. Rather she is a devoted sister to Fitz-Gerald, a paraplegic who needs morphine to ease his pain. It's an expensive habit which Hughes pays for by selling her body. On one train trip, she sets her sights on Friels who turns out to have more than sex on his mind. Written and directed by Bob Ellis, who scripted the successful Paul Cox films MAN OF FLOWERS and MY FIRST WIFE, this has an intelligent, insightful screenplay but lacks anything of interest directorially. Handled like a standard made-for-TV film (there is no profanity or nudity), it relies on a repetitive style that employs the same shots and settings for each scene. THe only things that change from scene to scene are Hughes' wig and wardrobe and the clients whom she lures into her bed. Hughes turns in a masterful performance, switching personalities as effortlessly as she switches wigs. Her character, however, is such a coldhearted vampire that it is difficult to feel compassion for her. Friels (MALCOLM, GROUND ZERO) is excellent, but his character is as cold as Hughes'. leave a comment
