Barbara Loden (who was married to Elia Kazan) wrote, directed, and starred in this moving and insightful film which was brought in at a budget of $115,000. It's a powerful character study of an uneducated Pennsylvania coal-country woman who allows her husband a divorce and custody of her two children because, she admits, "I'm just no good." She leaves her hometown and drifts into a series of one-night stands with traveling salesmen whom she meets in bars. One day she wanders into a tavern while it is being held up by a neurotic thief, Higgins, who kidnaps her and makes her his hostage. Loden takes a liking to the disturbed man and accompanies him on his petty criminal escapades. Eventually he grows to like her as well and allows her to assist him. He buys her a dress and even compliments her when she does particularly well on a robbery. After a while, Higgins becomes tired of his lifestyle and decides to pull one last job, a bank, and then retire. Giving Loden the job of getaway driver, Higgins enters the bank and is killed by the police. Loden gets away. Alone again, Loden wanders into another roadside dive, and the film ends with a freeze frame on her vacant face. Well worth seeing, this film won acclaim at several film festivals, including the International Critics' Prize for Best Film at the 1970 Venice Film Festival. leave a comment
