The lives and loves behind the scenes at the racetrack are detailed in this thoroughbred soap opera. An ambitious young trainer, Joel Tarrant (Ty Hardin), enters into an illicit affair with the stable owner's wealthy wife, hot-to-trot Laura Rubio (Suzanne Pleshette), in the hope that someday he'll have enough dough to buy his own horses and stable. Husband Matt (Ralph Meeker) suspects what is going on and fires Joel. Desperate, Joel borrows money from the boss of his former girl friend, Ann Conroy (Dorothy Provine), to buy a promising horse. When the horse wins big in a preliminary race, Joel gets his hopes up, but the horse loses in the final run and leaves Joel financially busted. Although his horse fails him, Ann promises to stick around. Onetime Los Angeles Times sportswriter Jim Murray is appropriately cast as a sportswriter. While the plot may be heavy on the melodrama, the horse-racing photography by Lucien Ballard, a veteran of numerous westerns, is excellent. leave a comment
