Polish director Skolimowski's third film stars the director himself as a 30-year-old amateur boxer who earns a meager living from purses won in various bouts. A former college acquaintance, Zawieruszanka, helps Skolimowski to get an engineering job, but he is drawn back to the ring when he learns the factory has a boxing team. At an upcoming fight, Skolimowski is ruled the winner, when his opponent doesn't show up. The opponent later arrives and reveals that he was bribed not to show, demanding his half of the prize money. Skolimowski refuses to split his winnings, however, and the pair enters the ring for a rematch in which Skolimowski is easily beaten. As a youth Skolimowski really was a boxer (his first directorial effort was a documentary, starring himself, called BOXER). What is most unique about WALKOVER is the filmmaking technique; most boxing films are filled with heavily edited boxing montages, but a scant 29 such shots appear in all of WALKOVER. leave a comment
