WALKING ON THE SKY

From the opening shots of a suicidal man dressing for his last big moment to the gathering of friends trying to make sense of his seemingly senseless death, writer-director-star Carl T. Evans' patchy triple-threat debut owes more than a little to THE BIG CHILL, that white, upper-middle-class '80s zeitgeist favorite. And if Evans' own solipsistic characters are meant to reflect where some of us are in 2005, we're in deep trouble. After Josh Salinger (Michael Knowles), a gallery owner in his early thirties, jumps to his death from the roof of his downtown Manhattan apartment building, girlfriend Sara (Susan Misner), makes a round of distraught phone calls to the friends they once shared: Wall Street success Liz (Nicole Fonarow) and her henpecked husband, Jim (Chris Henry Coffey); softhearted, not-for-profit veterinarian Joann (Kristen Marie Holly); and minor-league ball player Nick (Randal Batinkoff). Dylan (Evans), the troubled black sheep of the group who has anger-management issues but no steady job or permanent address, arrives late to the fateful rooftop where they've made the odd decision to assemble. Nick goes in search of Josh's address book so Liz can start contacting his nearest and dearest, but finds instead the diary no one knew Josh kept. After few minutes of back-and-forth over whether it's more important to respect Josh's privacy or to satisfy their own curiosity over what drove him to such a desperate act, they decide to take turns reading the journal aloud. Over the course of what turns out to be a tediously long night, they wind up discovering a few ugly truths about each other. While hashing out their own problems, everyone seems to forget that poor, tortured Josh has recently made himself a permanent part of the New York City pavement, and that they are supposed to be sad. They get drunk, enter an "'80s flashback" karaoke contest at a local bar (note to Mr. Evans: BTO is from the '70s), get high on Josh's secret stash, hit on each other, punch each other out, admire the view from the ledge where Josh plummeted to his death and then pass out. When dawn mercifully breaks and they all cheerfully head off to the funeral home, no one even notices that they've failed to solve the mystery of Josh's suicide. Or did they? With friends like these, the poor guy took what he probably thought was the easy way out. leave a comment --Ken Fox
