Walking And Talking: Review
If the very idea of another movie about a bunch of overprivileged thirtysomethings and their relationships has you reaching for your revolver, Nicole Holofcener's winning debut feature will come as a pleasant surprise. Lifelong buddies Amelia (Catherine Keener) and Laura (Anne Heche) find their friendship in jeopardy after Laura announces her engagement. Laura seems to have it all, including the perfect guy, while Amelia's likeliest prospect is a geeky video store clerk (Kevin Corrigan). What's more, her therapist won't take her back, her cat's undergoing chemotherapy and her best friend is now Laura's answering machine. Strangely enough, these self-involved white kids remain likable throughout -- wisely, Holofcener focuses on the vicissitudes of friendship instead of the frustrated desires of the privileged, and her observations are dead-on. The film also boasts a formidable roster of fresh young talent, particularly Keener, who ably conveys Amelia's desperation without once sliding into pathos.
