This lighthearted remake of THE MORE THE MERRIER(1943) stars Cary Grant in his last film role. Grant is Sir William Rutland, an English industrialist who is unable to find hotel accommodations on the eve of the 1964 Tokyo Olympiad. Answering an "apartment to share" notice, he persuades Christine (Samantha Eggar) to allow him to stay with her. Then, he talks her into letting Steve(Jim Hutton), an American race walker, bunk there too. Christine's priggish fiance, Julius (John Standing), a British embassy official, isn't very happy about the living arrangements. Matters become even more complicated when a Soviet agent begins to suspect that Steve and Christine are spies. Meanwhile, Rutland is determined to bring Steve and Christine together and he will do just about anything to accomplish his goal. He even strips to his underclothes and joins Steve in his walk race through the streets of Tokyo. The film's finale is suitably romantic. Grant's performance is delightful, and Eggar and Hutton offer strong support in this winning comedy. leave a comment
