WALK IN THE CLOUDS, A
starstarstarstar
Half as interesting as a rerun of Falcon Crest and twice as long. A WALK IN THE CLOUDS marks the Hollywood debut of Mexican director Alfonso Arau, whose LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE (1993) remains the highest-grossing foreign-language film ever released in the U.S. Keanu Reeves stars as a rootless WWII vet who agrees to pose as husband to Victoria (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon), the pregnant daughter of a wealthy, despotic winemaker (Giancarlo Giannini). Reworked from Alessandro Blasetti's bittersweet comedy QUATTRO PASSI FRA LE NUVOLE (1942), A WALK IN THE CLOUDS blithely dispenses with the earlier film's analysis of poverty and labor under Fascism, substituting a golden, impossibly picturesque dream world in which work is always festive and authority is never questioned. leave a comment
