It Waits: Review

Though the title of this direct-to-DVD fright flick produced by TV veteran Steven J. Cannell suggests that something primal and scary is about to pounce at any minute, fright fans must settle for a standard-issue rustic splatter film. In a sylvan area of British Columbia, zealous grad students blast open a cave and wake up a dormant carnivorous spirit. Meanwhile, the local forest ranger, Danny St. Claire (Cerina Vincent, of Eli Roth's CABIN FEVER) is assuring her boss, Rick Bailey (Greg Kean), that she can handle routine duties like operating the sluiceway on a nearby dam. But beneath her competent façade, Danny is a mess: Having survived a car crash that killed her best friend, she's cuts off contact with her former beau, Sheriff Justin Rawley (Dominic Zamprogna), and drinks way too much. When Justin stops by to check up on her, he begs her to stop blaming herself for her pal’s death, but before Justin can begin to assuage Danny’s boozy guilt something sabotages his jeep. He convinces her that they need to head back to civilization on foot, but after an encounter two hikers a ferocious monster attacks, savaging everyone but Danny and deliberately tormenting her by dragging the bodies back to her station and arranging them in grisly tableau. Danny makes a second attempt to escape through the woods and runs smack into Joseph Riverwind (Eric Schweig), a anthropology professor who tell her that she's up against a 1000 year-old demon that has somehow mated with the basest qualities of humankind. After fatally mangling Mr. Riverwind and Mr. Bailey, the demonic spirit bares its fangs at Danny. Given that it’s devoured everyone else within its domain, can Danny send this malevolent being back to its hellhole? Screenwriters Thomas Szollosi and Richard Christian Matheson (son of the legendary Richard Matheson) waste a lot of time developing Danny’s back story about the fatal car crash while director Steven R. Monroe piles on the gore; the result is repetitive, silly and more than a little gross. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
