Without Jack Lemmon's engaging performance there would be little to recommend in this standard service comedy; with it THE WACKIEST SHIP IN THE ARMY is diverting if unexceptional entertainment. During WW II, Lt. Rip Crandall (Lemmon) is given command of the USS Echo, a run-down ship with the archetypal inexperienced, motley crew, then assigned to deliver an Australian observer to a Japanese-held island. After doing his best to whip his crew into shape, Crandall, with the help of his inexperienced second in command, Ens. Tommy Hanson (Ricky Nelson), steers the Echo through enemy waters disguised as a native vessel, and after a series of thrilling but mostly humorous adventures, manages to learn the whereabouts of the Japanese fleet. This slight premise is primarily an excuse to exploit the comic genius of Lemmon; placed in a seemingly hopeless situation (as he is in so many of his more successful roles), he goes through his chores with a look of exasperation and confusion, his boundless energy preventing the film from sliding into the tedium the script otherwise seems to have promised. When not providing the film's love interest (with Patricia Driscoll) or acting wet behind the ears, Nelson "hits the high C's"--as the film's advertising proclaimed--offering his rendition of "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" (Louis Alter, Eddie De Lange), introduced by Billie Holiday in NEW ORLEANS (1947). Warren Berlinger and Mike Kellin also contribute fine supporting performances to this film that later served as the inspiration for a short-lived TV series. leave a comment
