VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA was the inspiration for the long-running television series of the same name. Its excellent cast, including Walter Pidgeon, Joan Fontaine, and Peter Lorre, play rather predictable characters, but the film boasts some captivating special effects and sets. Adm. Harriman Nelson (Pidgeon) is the inventor of a nuclear submarine designed to reach depths greater than man has ever reached before. This capacity is later required to evade submarines that are trying to blow it up. Against the wishes of the United Nations, Nelson decides to save the world by launching missiles against the Van Allen radiation belt, which has gone out of control and is threatening to melt the Earth. Nelson sees this mission through despite the other hostile subs and the efforts of Dr. Susan Hiller (Fontaine) to sabotage the project. In one of the most exciting scenes, the sub is attacked by a giant squid. leave a comment
