The title says everything for this display of then prominent styles that are marched across the stage in beautiful Technicolor. Baxter is the owner of a chic boutique who must contend with innumerable obstacles, including a nagging wife, demanding customers, and an astute rival just waiting for him to make a mistake. But he fares well, and in fact seems to enjoy all the excitement. Though its obvious selling point was the sparkling fashions presented by top models of the day (Miss Lucky Strike and Miss Lux Soap, among others), VOGUES OF 1938 was a neatly conceived and tightly directed effort, with some lively well-placed tunes. "That Old Feeling" (Lew Brown, Sammy Fain, sung by Virginia Verrill), earned an Oscar nomination, and the film also was nominated for Best Sound. Other songs include "Lovely One" (Frank Loesser, Manning Sherwin), "Turn on the Red Hot Heat (Burn the Blues Away)" (Paul Francis Webster, Louis Alter), "King of Jam" (Alter). leave a comment
