An all-star international cast and location shooting done all over the globe contributed to the $17 million price tag for this, one of the most expensive films ever to come out of Japan. The yarn concerns the near destruction of the world, precipitated by the accidental release of germs developed for chemical warfare. In Antarctica, where the intense cold kills off the germs, a few hundred people survive the apocalyptic events and are left with the task of repopulating the planet.
