Lombard is a hooker who promises to leave town in exchange for a suspended jail term. Having no intention of honoring her pledge, she disentrains uptown and she taxis back to the center of the city, intending to bilk driver O'Brien of his fare. O'Brien spouts jokes and philosophy about women. Lombard takes a liking to him and romance blooms. She gives up the street life and marries O'Brien. On their wedding night the police come to arrest Lombard but O'Brien sticks up for her. Lombard later goes to a hotel intending to collect $200 loaned earlier to a girl friend. O'Brien hears about this and assumes the worst. When someone is murdered at the hotel, evidence points to Lombard as the culprit. She claims innocence and O'Brien agrees, helping to clear his wife of all charges. Future stars Lombard and O'Brien were only minor contract players in 1932, and consequently they were cast in this low-budget programmer. Their combined talents make this one better than most, creating flesh-and-blood characterizations within cliched situations. Buzzell's direction has good pacing, balancing the elements of drama and comedy with a fine sense of realism. VIRTUE is historically interesting as a showcase for Lombard's and O'Brien's pre-superstardom work. leave a comment
