The Virginian: Review

This uninspired remake of the oft-filmed Owen Wister story has little going for it except a few good performances. McCrea is the title character this time, following in the steps of Dustin Farnum, Kenneth Harlan, and Gary Cooper. When a friend, Tufts, takes up with rustler Donlevy, McCrea first tries to warn him off, but later stands by while a posse hangs Tufts. Britton rejects him after this episode, but they are later reconciled when McCrea takes a bullet from Donlevy. On the day McCrea and Britton are to be married, there is a final showdown with Donlevy, and McCrea comes out on top. Paramount tried to revamp the familiar story with the addition of Technicolor and a more adult approach to the plot, but to no avail. Although McCrea is probably better in his role than Cooper, and Donlevy is always a terrific heavy, the public had little interest in the film, and it passed virtually unnoticed. This version did, however, have the correct reading of the line for which everyone remembers this story: "When you call me that, smile." leave a comment
