Scenic Virginia backgrounds and a decent cast could do little to save this dreary story about the New York showgirl who goes back home to the southern state to claim an inheritance. As the young woman who is interested only in selling the property that is now hers, Carroll soon finds herself involved in a love triangle with MacMurray and Hayden, the latter mainly because of the affluence and financial security he can offer. This was Hayden's first screen appearance, and like the others in the cast, he was handcuffed by the material. A year prior to the release of VIRGINIA, MacMurray, Carroll, Griffith, and Van Upp collaborated on the successful CAFE SOCIETY and HONEYMOON IN BALI, and they had every reason to believe that this film would do equally well.
