Writer-director Deborah Kampmeier's rough-edged but affecting drama revolves around an unworldy 17-year-old and the brutal consequences of her rebellion against the strict religious mores of her family and neighbors. The cracks in the small-town Reynolds family's facade are apparent there long before bad-girl Jesse (Elisabeth Moss, of TV's The West Wing) starts drinking, smoking, shoplifting and refusing to pay lip so much as lip service to the Baptist beliefs of her parents ... read more leave a comment

Jane Lynch Enters the Dating Game

Who put the overly amorous boss from The 40 Year Old Virgin in charge of a dating service?! Part of the credit goes to Will & Grace's Eric McCormack, one of the executive producers of the Lifetime series Lovespring International (premiering tonight at 11 pm/ET). In this improv comedy, Jane Lynch plays Victoria, the head of an "elite Beverly Hills" dating service... based out of Tarzana, California... whose staffers are as pathetic as its pretend pedigree. CASH ON DELIVERY

The action sequel Transporter 2 delivered a No. 1 opening over the four-day Labor Day weekend box office with a better-than-expected $20 million, more than twice the original's debut haul in 2002. That pushed The 40 Year-Old Virgin into second place after two weekends on top. Adding another $16.6 million to the till, Virgin's total gross rose to $71.9 million and counting. Among other newcomers, Oscar shoo-in The Constant Gardener bowed strongly in third with $10.8 million while Nick Cannon's Underclassman was held back at No. 11 with $3 million. On the bright side, there's always "Drumline 2." read more

THIS VIRGIN'S GOT LEGS

The 40 Year Old Virgin saw enough action over the weekend to retain the No. 1 spot at the box office, screwing The Brothers Grimm in the process. Retaining nearly 80 percent of its opening-weekend audience, Virgin scored another $16.4 million to bring its 10-day total to $48.7 million. Grimm, meanwhile, debuted in second with a relatively weak $15.1 million. I say "relatively" because the weekend's other newcomers would have killed for half that coin. Underground spooker The Cave got buried alive at No. 6 with $6.2 million, while Undiscovered remained just that at No. 18 with $690,000. read more

THE 40-YEAR-OLD BAZILLIONAIRE

Talk about getting lucky! Silver-screen Virgin Steve Carell is in negotiations to replace Jim Carrey in Universal's Bruce Almighty sequel for, oh, heaps more than the half a mil he raked in for his breakthrough flick. According to Variety, in Evan Almighty, the Daily Show vet will reprise his role of the news anchor he portrayed opposite Carrey in Bruce. Morgan Freeman is likely to play God again, but Jennifer Aniston is highly unlikely to sign on at all. Speaking of our old Friend.... read more
