The directing debut of Japanese pop culture sensation "Beat" Takeshi Kitano is a loony apotheosis of the crime genre--frenzied, jokey, ultraviolent and polymorphously perverse. Kitano stars as Detective Azuma, a Tokyo policeman with the vengeful spirit and self-righteous crankiness of a Japanese Harry Callaghan. Despite his shambling, almost comical demeanor, the middle-aged Azuma is unscrupulous in pursuit of justice, disdaining police protocol and enforcing his authority with demented outbursts of violence. When vicious gay hitman Kiyohiro (Haku Ryu) engineers the kidnapping of the detective's brain-damaged sister, Azuma's near-psychotic response fully justifies the movie's Japanese title, which translates roughly as "Warning: This Man Is Wild!" leave a comment
