1988, Movie, PG, 98 mins

Though not the equal of the marvelous BIG, VICE VERSA is infinitely more entertaining than the other mind-and-body transference films Hollywood has coughed up in the last two years, LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON and 18 AGAIN. Marshall Seymour (Judge Reinhold), a department store executive, and his girl friend (Corinne Bohrer), also a store executive, make a buying trip to Thailand, where smugglers hide a stolen jeweled skull among Marshall's purchases. When his son, Charlie (Fred Savage), comes to stay, an off-handed wish to trade places is made real by the magical skull. With his son's mind inhabiting his body, Marshall goes off to face his jealous junior executive rivals, while Charlie (kid's body, Dad's mind) is off to school. VICE VERSA is based on the 1948 film of the same name, which was in turn adapted from an 1871 novel by F. Anstey. The story isn't particularly believable, the revelations not fresh or profound, but the film succeeds anyway because of its strong lead performances. A true family picture in the most entertaining sense, VICE VERSA provides laughs for both kids and adults. leave a comment
