This hard-hitting expose of postwar Germany from the maker of PICK-UP ON SOUTH STREET provided a perfect vehicle for Fuller to expostulate on human cruelty and misunderstanding. Though at times appearing a bit too preachy, with actual footage from the concentration camps he effectively weaves two separate stories into one centering on Best as an American soldier assigned to the peacekeeping force. Because of his love for the German girl Cummings, the woman who saved him from falling into the grip of the Gestapo during the last days of the war, Best quits his post to marry her. (Regulations forbade soldiers to have relations with German women.) Although Cummings does not at first love Best, marrying him mainly as a meal ticket, her affection for him begins to grow once they're married. She also has a 15-year-old brother, Daye, who is a member of the neo-Nazi group known as the Werewolves, an organization which continues to follow the pronouncements of Adolf Hitler. These young punks are the main concern of the peacekeeping force, and it is through Daye's cooperation that their activities are brought to a halt. Cummings takes her brother to the trials at Nuremberg, where he finally is made aware of the atrocities his beloved Fuhrer was guilty of and the youth quickly repents. Although films depicting Nazis and their world have been made ad nauseam since this one, Fuller's work was a timely reminder of occurrences that people wanted to forget but should never be allowed to. Somehow an awful and misused song sung by Paul Anka made it into the soundtrack. leave a comment
