You could hardly ask for more from a historical spectacle: Silly wigs, plunging décolletage, lavish banquets in ornate halls, a stirring score from Ennio Morricone and witty dialogue by Tom Stoppard. It's even based on a true incident — the 1671 visit of King Louis XIV (Julian Sands) to the chateau of the Prince de Conde (Julian Glover), and the the elaborate entertainments designed by Francois Vatel (Gerard Depardieu), the prince's master of pleasures and festivities — so there's even a little history amid the gilded fluff.
