The Vanquished

Dull oater stars Payne as a Confederate soldier who was held as a prisoner by the Union and, now that the war is over, must return home. Upon his arrival, he is shocked to learn that his town is now run by a dishonest, paranoid man, Bettger, who is ruling the area as if he were a king. When the townsfolk see that Payne has returned, they attempt to get him to lead a revolt against Bettger, but Payne refuses and appears to turn against them by getting a job as the tax collector.
