Overly sentimental and contrived soap opera which has Hayes married to the increasingly erratic Kruger who is suffering from inherited insanity. Unhappy in her marriage (Hayes doesn't realize that her husband is suffering from a family disease), she takes a lover, Montgomery, who is soon shipped off to Egypt with the British army. Montgomery gets his arm blown off in battle, and, after Kruger eventually dies, the couple marry. After VANESSA, HER LOVE STORY, Hayes would all but disappear from the screen until 1951 when she starred in MY SON JOHN. Famed novelist Walpole, who collaborated on the screenplay made from this fourth and last of his "Herries Chronicle" novels, had been brought to Hollywood by producer Selznick primarily to work on the studio's screenplay for DAVID COPPERFIELD (1935). Like Hayes, he didn't remain long in Babylon after this bomb. leave a comment
