On his graduation from high school, eager-eyed Getz uses his graduation money as down payment for a gaudy van that would make any others his age green with jealousy. Rather than go to college, he disappoints his folks by deciding to spend the rest of his life trying to lure girls into the water-bed-equipped vehicle. A pal fixes him up with nice girl White. They like each other but Getz's sexual drives cause an inevitable rift. Later Getz meets up with his old boss, DeVito (in a role prior to his great success as the curmudgeon Louie on the sit-com "Taxi"), who desperately needs $200 to pay off a gambling debt. Getz gives him the cash, though this was to be a payment on his beloved van. Later Getz makes a pass at Marie, but this is interrupted by her boy friend, Oliver. Getz runs into White and impulsively tells her she's the girl for him. Next thing you know, it's lovemaking time in the back of the van. But wait--Getz still needs some money for his down payment. He meets Oliver in a van drag race, which he naturally wins along with the everlasting love of White. There are some moments in THE VAN where the filmmakers try to rise above the teenage make-out movie genre by injecting a little humanity into the characters. One can't enter a pigpen without coming out muddy, however. The miniscule good moments are overshadowed by the macho attitudes and general stupidity of the characterizations. In the end, this is indistinguishable from any other California-kid-and-his-car movie. leave a comment
