Los muertos live in this in-name-only sequel to JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES (1998), which retains little from the first film except the concept of mercenary vampire hunters on the Vatican payroll. Lone-wolf hunter Derek Bliss (Jon Bon Jovi) gets an assignment to track a nest of blood drinkers based in Mexico, and is warned by his superiors that this is a job for a team. But every hunter Bliss tries to recruit is dead when he arrives, leading Bliss to suspect that someone who knows every detail of his mission is tipping off the bloodsuckers. Bliss's last potential recruit is working at an isolated diner, and while waiting to speak to him, Bliss notices a girl he suspects is a vampire. But before he can take action, a pack of bloodthirsty vampires, lead by the vicious Una (Arly Jover), bursts in and kills everyone. Bliss later sees the suspected vampire girl hitchhiking in broad daylight; he picks her up and learns her name — Zoey (Natasha Gregson Wagner) — and her unusual story. Though she was bitten by a vampire over a year ago, she located a Mexican doctor who keeps her supplied with a drug that keeps full-blown undeadness at bay. Short on options, Bliss puts together a team consisting of bad-ass Ray Collins (Darius McCrary); Zoey, who has a psychic link with the evil Una; Father Rodrigo (Christian de la Fuente), whose entire order was slaughtered by vampires; and Sancho (Diego Luna, of Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN), a teenager who needs permission from his mom to fight the living dead. They soon discover that Una has acquired the legendary Berzier's Cross and kidnapped a priest in hopes of performing a bloody ceremony that will allow her to tolerate the sunlight. Her first attempt is a failure, and now it's a race against time: Can the ragtag vampire hunters find and stop Una's crew before she figures out how to make the ceremony work, and is free to wreak havoc by day and by night? Writer-director Tommy Lee Wallace, a longtime Carpenter associate, does a workmanlike job with this gory sequel, without adding any fresh twists that would make his movie stand out from the crowded ranks of vampire pictures. Gregson Wagner turns in what may be the worst performance of her career to date — her flat, squeaky line delivery is almost unbearable — while '80s rocker-turned-actor Bon Jovi delivers a perfectly respectable turn as Bliss. He can't begin to match the seething intensity James Woods brought to the first film, but then again, who can? leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
