In this adult animnated film, a group of Mafioso vampires headquartered in Chicago during the 1930s is at war with a rival gang in Dusseldorf. Both gangs are after a secret formula developed by a Cuban scientist. The elixir is valuable because it allows vampires to survive in sunlight. Pepito, the Cuban scientist's nephew, is a trumpet player who inevitably gets caught up in these monster-Mafia wars. Though he doesn't realize it, Pepito is a vampire who has been given the serum ever since his childhood. Padron, a well-known cartoonist in his native land, uses a minimalist animation style that often recalls the simplicity of Jay Ward's "Rocky and Bullwinkle" series. Like that classic television cartoon, VAMPIRES IN HAVANA is easy on the eye and offers some marvelous satirical writing. Padron also has a gift for crude sexual humor, making his caricatures fun without being degrading. Though the animation quality isn't up to that in FRITZ THE CAT, VAMPIRES IN HAVANA is a much better work in the full realization of its humor. Padron understands that cartoons shouldn't be classified as strictly for children, and he has created a work of enormous fun.
