Resolved: Film students are annoying in person and insufferable in movies. If there's a counter-argument, it isn't made by this formulaic slasher movie, which picks up where URBAN LEGEND leaves off. It seems that someone has it in for the students of Alpine University's Orson Welles Film Center, and is particularly interested in tormenting student Amy Mayfield (Jennifer Morrison). Amy hopes that her thesis film, which involves creepy urban legends, will earn her the school's prestigious Hitchcock Award; several former winners have gone on to lucrative Hollywood careers. But she's not the only one with her eyes on the prize: High-strung horror freak Toby (Anson Mount) and Hollywood brat Graham (Joseph Lawrence) both want it desperately, and talented Travis (Matthew Davis) commits suicide after a bad grade knocks him out of the running. At least, he's supposed to have committed suicide; his identical twin brother Trevor (the twin no one knew existed until he started lurking around campus) is convinced Travis was murdered. Now a killer in a fencing mask is decimating the student body, dispatching the star of Travis's movie and Amy's collaborators Sandra (Jessica Cauffiel) and Simon (Marco Hofschneider) in accordance with legends left over from the last movie. Who will survive, and what will be left of their thesis films? Editor-composer John Ottman makes his directing debut with this meretricious sequel. On the plus side, Loretta Devine reprises her role as spunky campus cop Reese. But all her considerable charm isn't enough to compensate for the film's preposterous plotting and interchangeable young actors (the lone exception is Gina Gershon-lookalike Eva Mendes, who's wasted in her second-banana role). A word of warning — if you leave too quickly, you'll miss the movie's final, feeble in-joke, which involves URBAN LEGEND star Rebecca Gayheart and the theme music from Alfred Hitchcock Presents. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
