Urban Cowboy

If you can accept John Travolta as a Texan, half the problems of URBAN COWBOY have been surmounted. Here he plays a country boy who ventures to the big city to work at an oil refinery. Soon he's immersed in the nightlife that revolves around Gilley's, a cavernous honky-tonk with a famous mechanical bull. He meets sexy Debra Winger and, after a brief, intense courtship, the two are married. Problems, however, soon plague the relationship. Aside from Winger's winning performance, not much else here is interesting, save for Scott Glenn's solid portrayal of a heavy. Director James Bridges fails to instill much life into a narrative peopled with vapid characters.
