Ill-conceived update of John Ford's 1935 classic THE INFORMER, featuring a strong cast of black actors. Mayfield stars as a weak-willed black who sells his militant friend Julien (who killed a guard while robbing an armory) down the river for a measly $1,000 to help Dee, his girl friend-turned-hooker, feed her children. Julien is killed by the cops after a vicious gun battle when he is cornered at his mother's flat, and Mayfield's subsequent erratic and suspicious behavior sets militant leader St. Jacques wondering if he was the one who informed on Julien. Soon Mayfield is hauled before a militant "court" and found guilty. He escapes his captors but is killed by the blacks after visiting Dee for the last time. While UPTIGHT follows the structure of THE INFORMER very closely, the filmmakers are trying to stuff a square peg into a round hole by making the assumption that the black militant (i.e., violent) cause in America is as tragic, frustrating, and noble as the IRA's was against England in the early 1920s when the book was written. leave a comment
