With the U.S. team long gone, the only remaining red-white-and-blue underdog would be Paraguay, which takes on European champion Spain in the last quarterfinal in Johannesburg. An all-South American semifinals was still possible entering the final eight, but "La Albirroja" were by far the least likely to advance against Spain's lethal combination of talent and hunger. Striker Nelson Valdez is Paraguay's top weapon, while David Villa bids for a fifth goal in five games as Spain continues its quest to get an 0-for-12 World Cup gorilla off its back.

Avatar and The Hurt Locker lead the 82nd Academy Awards with nine nominations each.

The films join The Blind Side, Inglourious Basterds, District 9, An Education, Precious, A Serious Man, Up and Up in the Air in the expanded best picture race, which features 10 nominees for the first time in 66 years.

Up, Up and Away! Pixar's Latest Tops Box Office

Up floated to the top of the box office in its opening weekend, filling its balloons with $68.2 million. That's good enough for No.3 on the animation giant Pixar's all-time list, trailing only Finding Nemo (which opened with $70 mil) and The Incredibles.
