This is the lavish musical comedy that introduced 31-year-old vaudeville and stage star Danny Kaye to the movie audience. He plays confirmed hypochondriac Danny Weems, who is so fearful of illness that he works as a medical building's elevator operator--if disease strikes, help is no more than a scream away. When Danny and his best pal, Joe (Dana Andrews), are drafted into the Army, he must tell the woman he loves, Mary (Constance Dowling), that they are going off to war. Accordingly, Mary--who really likes Joe--joins the WACs with her friend Virginia (Dinah Shore), who signs on as a nurse because, of course, she's in love with Danny. The boys are shipped out to the Far East, but fate and the screenwriters intervene when Mary and Virginia, who came to bid them goodbye, are trapped on the ship. Not being a nurse like Virginia, Mary must stow away to avoid court-martial, and is shunted around the ship to escape the eagle eye of the martinet captain (Louis Calhern). Soon enough, Mary is discovered, Danny takes the blame, and things look bleak as Danny is placed in an Army jail after the ship docks. Then the Japanese attack and take Danny prisoner, but in a series of wonderfully funny escapades our neurotic hero escapes and even manages to nab some of the enemy. Kaye's superb comic timing is already in full evidence, allowing him to dominate every scene. Excellent choreography, superb sets, fine costumes, and a host of songs (several by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler) round out the enjoyment. leave a comment
