A rambunctious and spirited effort from Reynolds as the rags-to-riches title character who saves this otherwise weakly scripted, familiar musical from the long list of forgotten pictures. Cast as a penniless tomboy orphan, Reynolds makes her move into Denver's elite by marrying Presnell (recreating his Broadway role), who shortly thereafter strikes it rich. In order to insure her acceptance in high society, Reynolds heads for Europe and makes friends with royalty, bringing them home to meet the Denverites. The admiration of a prince nearly causes her to lose Presnell, so after another trip to Europe, she returns home to her loving husband. The ship she chooses, however, is the unsinkable Titanic. She gains her "unsinkable" tag by surviving the iceberg smash and rescuing countless souls from the icy waters. Based on a real-life character, Reynolds' role won her an Academy Award nomination and fervent critical acclaim. Also taking home an Oscar nomination was Daniel L. Fapp for his awesome, sometimes gaudy, cinematography. Other categories the film received nominations in were Best Art Direction, Best Sound, Best Music Score, and Best Costume Design. The film was the third largest grossing picture of 1964, raking in $7.5 million.
