The Unknown: Review

Even by the standards set by director Tod Browning, this macabre 1927 silent is really weird. The great Lon Chaney gives one of his astounding body transforming performances as Alonzo the Armless, a circus performer who uses his feet to throw knives and shoot guns at his assistant Nanon (a young Joan Crawford). Alonzo loves Nanon and wants to marry her; lucky for him, she has a pathological fear of being touched by men and likes the fact that Alonzo doesn't have hands. Or so she thinks.
