An entertaining but not very substantial drama which stars Robinson as a WW I veteran who returns from France, where he covered the war, to his former job as a domestic newspaperman. His paper, however, is too conservative, so, with the financial help of gangster Arnold, Robinson starts his own hard-hitting, sensational tabloid. The control of the paper is split 50-50 between Robinson and Arnold, but before long the partners are at odds. Arnold disapproves of Robinson's tactics and begins an attempt to wrestle away control. In the meantime, Robinson's closest aide, Orr, is becoming involved with a pretty singer, Hunt, who spends an inordinate amount of time with Arnold. Orr grows increasingly jealous of Hunt's closeness to the gangster and begins snooping for clues. He discovers that Hunt's father has run up a large debt to Arnold and has been forced into buying an inflated insurance policy from him in return. When Robinson threatens to expose Arnold's scam, the tensions between the two partners flare. Arnold kidnaps Orr and holds him for a pricey ransom--the remaining control of the newspaper. After a quarrel, Robinson is forced to shoot Arnold in self-defense. Knowing that his time is up, Robinson dictates a confession to secretary Day and then sets off on a suicidal transatlantic flight as part of a publicity campaign. The plane goes down and Robinson is killed, but rather than release the confession, Day burns it. Although Robinson's life has ended, the newspaper continues under the managerial hand of Orr and his new wife, Hunt. Essentially, UNHOLY PARTNERS is a nostalgic throwback to the films and people of an earlier era, specifically the post-WW I ground which had already been trod in FIVE STAR FINAL, also directed by LeRoy. In his autobiography, Robinson writes that UNHOLY PARTNERS is "I think, best forgotten." Not necessarily so; it simply seems to have gotten lost in a Hollywood that was swamped with WW II pictures and had no place for a post-WW I movie, especially one dealing with the 1930s themes of newspapermen and gangsters. Robinson and Arnold both turn in fine performances and LeRoy's direction is solid, but the film itself never rises above the ranks of B movie status. Hunt delivers one tune, "After You've Gone," penned by Henry Creamer and Turner Layton. leave a comment
