Luminous Diane Lane earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of an apparently contented housewife who, as middle age looms, impulsively cheats on husband Richard Gere with a hunky, considerably younger Frenchman (Olivier Martinez). But the casual affair inevitably becomes a tangled mess that ensnares everyone she loves. Adrian Lyne's loose 2002 remake of the 1969 Claude Chabrol thriller eventually gets bogged down in routine mystery machinations, but Martinez and Lane are electric. Being bad never looked so good.
