Undercover Doctor: Review
In this standard programmer, a doctor who serves the underworld lives a life of luxury until G-man Nolan catches on to the nature of his patients. The finale drives home the familiar philosophy that criminals must be punished--here they're all killed off by the feds. One-time FBI head J. Edgar Hoover had the final cut on this picture, as well as control over the ad campaign, so be prepared for some hard-core propaganda in favor of the bureau. This was the second in a series of G-men glorification pictures made by executive producer Harold Hurley under his deal with the publicity-hungry Hoover; the first was PERSONS IN HIDING (1939). The film is very loosely based on the life and times of Joseph P. "Doc" Moran, a practicing physician with mob connections who specialized in laundering mob money and performing plastic surgery to alter the appearance of wanted criminals. Author Hoover's FBI had nothing to do with the death of the hard-drinking doctor; he was murdered by two disgruntled ex-patients whose plastic surgery had been painfully unsuccessful. The two were wanted criminals Freddie Barker and Alvin Karpis, whom Hoover's agency had been unsuccessfully seeking at the time.
