Ronald Colman is a member of the French Foreign Legion. Herbert Mundin, who was his valet in England, follows him into the service when Colman is accused of having committed a crime. Colman is actually covering up for the real culprit, his kid brother. Colman meets Claudette Colbert, a camp follower who adores men in uniform and will stop at nothing to prove it. Victor McLaglen, Colman's commanding officer, is jealous of the way Colbert tosses herself at his charge, so he deliberately makes Colman's hard life even harder for him. Rosalind Russell, an English lady, arrives in the area, and Colman is immediately taken with her. He eventually says farewell to Colbert, who is terribly hurt. McLaglen sends Colman off on an impossible task which results in Colman's capture by an Arab chieftain. Colbert knows where Colman is being held, so she leads the soldiers to the Arab camp, but she is mortally wounded in the raid and dies with her arms around Colman. She is given a military burial while the Legionnaires watch with tears in their eyes, and Colman returns to England with Russell. UNDER TWO FLAGS is a rousing adaptation of the novel by Ouida that already had been made into a successful stage play and two silent films. The play was first staged in 1870, and Theda Bara starred as "Cigarette" in one of the silent versions. The film was shot in the dry, dusty Arizona desert under worse conditions than the Legion faced in the Sahara. This was Colman's last picture for Fox Studios. Later, he went on to the freelance market and upped his price considerably to $250,000 per movie. Hungarian born J. Edward Bromberg made his debut in this film; before his death in 1951, he would appear in 30 more. leave a comment
