Fay is cast as the womanizing Don Carlos who agrees to bring in a cattle rustler within 10 days, but instead makes a play for every senorita in sight. Fay, better known for his stage and radio appearances than for his cinema work, is an odd choice as the amorous bandido. His freckled Irish face notwithstanding, he does a fine comic job. Reportedly, a clash of enlarged egos occurred during filming, with director Curtiz and Fay getting surprisingly good results from their collaboration considering that they were not on speaking terms. Armida's staccato speech is outstanding as she vocally emulates a machine gun. Curtiz apparently was entranced by Loy, who got a lot of footage in one of her early stock ethnic roles as a languorous Latin lovely, one of the many romanced by the satyriasis-suffering Fay. An enjoyable, aptly-directed comic western, which is the first of the genre to be shot in color, making bold use of it in the Mexican settings.
