A mediocre western, which suffers especially in comparison to TRUE GRIT, released the same year. Here Wayne plays a Union colonel who is leading a herd of 3,000 horses into Mexico, with Gabriel, his adopted Indian son, at his side. Also en route to Mexico is Confederate colonel Hudson, who is leading an exodus of fellow Southerners to a place where they won't have to see their land devoured by carpetbaggers. The two colonels meet and unite in a fight against Mexican bandits. Wayne eventually has to come to Hudson's aid when the Southerners are captured by Aguilar, a supporter of Benito Juarez, who plans to kill his prisoners unless Wayne turns over his herd. Complications arise involving the French cavalry's plan to take over delivery of the horses. Wayne, however, takes the horses to Aguilar and secures Hudson's freedom. The attempt to pay tribute to John Ford, evident in McLaglen's direction, is poor--especially in an Independence Day party that has Hudson's Southerners and Wayne's Northerners whacking away at each other. THE UNDEFEATED adds up to nothing more than a weak imitation of many other westerns--paying little or no heed to such issues as originality. A pair of Los Angeles Rams football players make an appearance--Gabriel, as Wayne's Indian aide, and Olsen, as a kindly blacksmith. leave a comment
