One of the first "Let's go back and rescue our boys still trapped in `Nam" movies, UNCOMMON VALOR stars Gene Hackman as Col. Rhodes, a retired Army officer and Vietnam vet who comes to believe that his son, listed as missing in action over Laos 10 years before, is still alive and being held as a POW. With financial support from a gung-ho oil tycoon (Robert Stack), Rhodes gathers a group of veterans, subjects them to a period of intensive training, and leads them back into the jungles in hopes of finding his son. Hackman's performance, beautiful photography by Stephen Burum (RUMBLE FISH) and Ric Waite (THE LONG RIDERS), and some effective action direction from Ted Kotcheff (FIRST BLOOD) make this watchable, but the jingoist wish-fulfillment inherent in the material is ultimately disturbing. Coproducer John Milius carries this kind of right-wing propaganda even farther in his anti-Soviet, pro-survivalist RED DAWN (1984). leave a comment
