A reproduction of the Chekhov play which ran off-Broadway here, unfortunately, makes minimum use of the film medium. As faithful as it is to the original, it is overly talky in its telling of a country doctor (Tone) who devotes his attentions to his work but still falls in love with an unattainable beauty. Voskovec is cast in the title role, a frustrated old man who realizes that he hasn't lived his life to the fullest. The same cast was in the stage production four years earlier, with the exception of Dorn-Heft, who replaced Signe Hasso. leave a comment
